Hyderabad:A man who went into the forests near the Reddypet School thanda in Machareddy mandal of Kamareddy district was attacked by a sloth bear on Friday morning. Salavath Mattu, had gone into the forest along with his wife and a few others to collect firewood in the early hours.According to the Machareddy forest range officer Mazaruddin, the group happened to enter a patch of the forest which had several chironji nut and mahua trees where a sloth bear was also reportedly present.Mattu, who suffered serious injuries on his head in the attack, was provided primary treatment in Kamareddy and then shifted to a private hospital in Suraram near Hyderabd where his condition was reported to be stable.Sloth bears enjoy feeding on mahua flowers and on chironji nuts and it was an unfortunate incident where the firewood collecting group ran into the animal, the forest officer said.Though it was a sloth bear that attacked Mattu, his family claimed that Mattu was injured by a tiger. This set off alarm bells in the forest department as a tiger, which had been going around several districts over the past six months, and spent a considerable time in Yadadri-Bhongir district too, was last seen in Kamareddy district about a week ago.Kamareddy district forest officer Nikita Boga said those in a state of panic after the attack may have assumed that it was a tiger, but inspections at the site showed that it was a sloth bear. The wandering tiger, meanwhile, according to a senior forest officer, is now moving around in a smaller circle between Kamareddy, Rajanna Siricilla, Jagtial and Nizamabad districts, but has kept away from humans and villages.Asked if the wandering tiger may have finally settled down and found a territory, the officer said it was too early to determine that as tigers usually take around six months to settle down in a territory. If it continues to remain the same area for a few more months, then we may have a tiger establish a territory in a new area in the state, the officer added.
