A video from IIT Jodhpur, one of India’s premier institutes, has sparked widespread discussion on social media after it highlighted issues related to the campus water supply. The institute, where students are expected to focus on academics and research, is instead grappling with basic infrastructure concerns, including access to drinking water. The issue came to light after a video showing students running after water tankers went viral across social media platforms. In the footage, a student can be seen chasing a tanker to collect water.According to an English daily, after the situation came to light, IIT Jodhpur Director Avinash Kumar Agarwal acknowledged the situation, saying the institute may be the only central institution in the state without a regular supply of clean water. In the report, he mentioned, “In IIT Jodhpur, we get rural supplies. I think IIT Jodhpur is the only central institution in Rajasthan which does not have a clean water supply. We have rural supplies. And no other institution in Jodhpur is told that you bring your own water.”He further explained that, unlike other institutions in Jodhpur, the IIT campus has to arrange its own water supply from the pumping station. However, the situation worsened when the machine at the pumping station was damaged two days ago due to voltage fluctuations, disrupting the water supply. The staff of the institute worked for nearly 30 hours to restore the system, as per the director. During such breakdowns, the institute sources water from Surpura village as an alternative supply. He further mentioned that ensuring a stable water supply is the responsibility of the state government. He added that a request would soon be made to the Chief Secretary during an upcoming visit to lay a direct pipeline to the IIT Jodhpur campus. He said such a solution is necessary so that students and staff on campus do not continue to face difficulties in accessing drinking water.
