Washington DC: US President Donald Trump on Saturday (local time) shared CCTV footage showing the entry of a shooter at the venue of the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, along with images of the detained suspect. In a post on Truth Social, Trump referred to the security breach, stating that an armed individual attempted to force entry into the premises and was subsequently neutralised by security personnel.Addressing the press in the briefing room after the incident, Trump said he had spoken to the security officer who was shot during the attack. “A man charged a security checkpoint armed with multiple weapons, and he was taken down by some very brave members of the Secret Service… One officer was shot, but saved… the vest did the job. I just spoke to the officer, and he’s doing great,” he said.Trump also used the incident to emphasise the need for enhanced security infrastructure, highlighting the ballroom he is planning to construct at the White House. He said the proposed structure would offer a more secure venue for such events. “It’s not a particularly secure building… This is why we have to have all of the attributes of what we’re planning at the White House. It’s a larger room, much more secure, drone-proof, with bulletproof glass,” he added. The US President praised the swift response of the Secret Service and law enforcement agencies, confirming that the suspect had been apprehended. In another Truth Social post, he said, “Quite an evening in D.C. Secret Service and Law Enforcement did a fantastic job… The shooter has been apprehended, and I have recommended that we ‘LET THE SHOW GO ON,’ but we will be guided by law enforcement.” He added that the final decision on whether to resume the event would be taken by authorities. This is not the first time Trump has been targeted. In July 2024, he was shot at during a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, and was escorted off stage by Secret Service agents after sustaining an injury to his ear.ANI Reporter Reena Bhardwaj, who was present at the dinner, described the tense moments inside the ballroom. She said chaos erupted after a loud noise, initially mistaken for clattering dishes, was heard. Within seconds, panic spread as staff rushed for cover. Guests, including Bhardwaj, took shelter under tables before security personnel secured the area. She added that Trump was swiftly escorted out, followed by Cabinet members including Scott Bessent, Kash Patel, Pete Hegseth and Witkoff. Security agents with long guns were seen on stage as the situation unfolded.Chaos broke out on Saturday evening after suspected gunshots were reported in the lobby of the Washington Hilton, prompting the evacuation of Trump and other senior officials from the White House Correspondents’ Dinner. Trump, First Lady Melania Trump and Vice President JD Vance were moved to a secure location by tactical teams.
