Hyderabad: Rheumatic diseases are increasingly being observed among women above the ageof 20, experts said at a conference in Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences(Nims) here on Saturday. They were speaking at a continuing medicaleducation (CME) programme on the theme ‘medical–obstetric interface inrheumatic diseases’.Nims director Dr Nagari Beerappa inaugurated the event that was organised bythe department of clinical immunology and rheumatology in collaboration withthe obstetrics department of Fernandez Foundation. Experts noted that boththe disease and certain medications used in rheumatic diseases and couldhave adverse effects on pregnancy.They stressed the need for close coordination between obstetrics andrheumatology departments, stating that better communication and amultidisciplinary approach are essential to ensure improved maternal healthand positive outcomes for newborns.
