Bhubaneswar : In a shocking incident from Odisha’s Keonjhar district, a man allegedly exhumed the skeletal remains of his deceased sister and brought them to a bank after repeated attempts to withdraw money from her account were denied. The incident was reported from Mallipashi village under Patna police limits. The man, identified as Jitu Munda of Dianali village, reached a local rural bank on Monday carrying his sister’s remains and placed them outside the premises, triggering panic among staff and locals. According to sources, Jitu had been visiting the bank for several days seeking to withdraw a total savings deposit of Rs 19,300 from the account of his late sister, Kalara Munda, who died around two months ago. Despite informing bank officials about her death, his requests were reportedly turned down, with staff insisting on the account holder’s physical presence or completion of formal procedures required in such cases. Frustrated over the repeated refusals and allegedly unaware of the legal process for accessing a deceased person’s account, Jitu exhumed the body and brought the remains to the bank as a mark of protest. The incident quickly drew attention, prompting intervention by Patna police. Officials reached the spot, pacified the man and the gathering crowd, and later ensured that the remains were taken back to Dianali village for reburial in accordance with local customs. No official statement had been issued by the bank authorities till the time of filing this report. Police, too, have not confirmed whether any case has been registered in connection with the incident. Local residents expressed concern over the episode, calling it both tragic and avoidable. “This is an unfortunate incident. The bank authorities should have properly explained the procedure to him. Being from a tribal background, he may not have understood the formalities. Such situations must be handled more sensitively,” said Subrat Mohanty, a resident.
