Kurnool: In a significant move towards eco-friendly waste management, a state-of-the-art biodigester facility has been launched in Nandyal town to efficiently convert wet waste into high-quality manure within just 24 hours. The facility, which was inaugurated by district collector Rajakumari Gania on Saturday at Ponnapuram Colony, is part of the ‘Swarna Andhra Swachh Andhra’ programme.Built at a cost of Rs 17 lakh, the biodigester is designed to process up to 1,000 kg of wet waste daily. This rapid conversion system is expected to ease the burden of waste disposal in urban areas while promoting sustainability. The manure produced can be used in agricultural fields, fruit orchards, and even household plants, enhancing soil health and productivity. The initiative is supported by nearly 30 hotels in Nandyal, both large and small, which will send their wet waste to the biodigester for composting. Additionally, waste from hostels and other institutions will also be processed at the facility. Local municipal authorities have been tasked with ensuring systematic implementation to maximise the facility’s impact.“The biodigester system is essential for maintaining cleanliness and promoting sustainable practices in urban areas. By converting wet waste into valuable manure, we are not only managing waste effectively but also supporting environmental health,” said the collector. She emphasised that public participation and proper segregation of waste at source are crucial for the success of such initiatives, aiming to make Nandyal a cleaner and more sustainable town.
