OC, Kalighat Police Station Suspended For Social Media Post After TMC Complaint To EC

KOLKATA: The Kolkata Police suspended Officer-in-Charge (OC) of the Kalighat Police Station, Goutam Das, on Saturday following a complaint by Trinamul Congress to Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar against his recent Facebook post which showed him posing with an automatic assault rifle in uniform for shooting while sitting in his chamber with a message “Ready for new assignment….” Incidentally, TMC supremo and West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee’s residence is also located under Kalighat Police Station’s jurisdiction. On Friday evening, TMC vice president Joyprakash Majumdar lodged the complaint against Mr Das alleging that his social media post was ‘objectionable’ in view of the Model Code of Conduct of the EC and his service conduct rules. Later Chief Electoral Officer, West Bengal Manoj Agarwal inquired about it from Kolkata Police Commissioner Ajay Nanda who acted within 24 hours. Ironically, Mr Das was made the OC of the Kalighat Police Station by the EC before the second and final phase of the Assembly polls. He was earlier posted in the special branch of the city police. The inspector-rank cop has been replaced by another Chameli Mukherjee, who was the OC of Ultadanga Police Station in the northern parts of the city. This is the second instance of strong action on cops in the city amid polls. Earlier, Ramkrishna Kayal, a constable of the first battalion of the Kolkata armed police, was suspended on April 27, two days before the second phase of polls, for “his conduct on social media” after a viral video showed him alleging ‘Islamisation’ of state government under TMC-rule.
