VIJAYAWADA: Andhra Pradesh has emerged as a national role model in energy efficiency and conservation due to its progressive policies and effective implementation, Chief Secretary K. Vijayanand said on Saturday. Addressing the valedictory of National Energy Conservation Week–2025 celebrations organised by the Andhra Pradesh State Energy Conservation Mission (APSECM) in Vijayawada, he said the State Energy Conservation (SEC) Awards reflected the collective efforts of government departments, industries, institutions and urban local bodies. Vijayanand, along with APGENCO MD and APSECM CEO S. Nagalakshmi and APCPDCL CMD P. Pulla Reddy, presented awards to government and private organisations excelling in energy efficiency. Among the Gold Award winners were Simhadri Super Thermal Power Station, Balaji Cement Works (UltraTech), Divi’s Laboratories Unit-2, JNTU Anantapur, Welcomhotel Guntur, Sattenapalli RTC Bus Depot and Tirupati Municipal Corporation. Silver Awards went to Dr NTTPS, Sri Jayajyothi Cement, Laurus Labs Unit-3, GMR Institute of Technology, Novotel Varun Beach, APSRTC Razole Bus Stand and Bhimavaram Municipality. Vijayanand recalled that Andhra Pradesh adopted a structured approach to energy conservation from 2015, beginning with LED street lighting in Visakhapatnam after Cyclone Hudhud, achieving 40–45 per cent savings. He said over two crore households were covered under LED programmes, resulting in nearly 30 per cent energy savings, and highlighted the establishment of 1,550 Energy Literacy Clubs in schools. Nagalakshmi said APSECM has been implementing the State Energy Efficiency Action Plan since 2017 and that the state won the National Energy Conservation Award for the fourth consecutive year. Pulla Reddy said saving one unit of power was equivalent to generating two units and outlined APCPDCL’s initiatives, including LED promotion, smart meters and remote streetlight management.
