BENGALURU: A customer on Thursday alleged he came across ‘a worm/insect’ his Pongal dish at The Rameshwaram Café located at Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) premises on Thursday and drew the attention of the staff. However, Divya Raghavendra, founder of the café, in a press release, stated: “It is a clear case of staged act with malicious intent to extort money” and added, “There have been similar attempts in the past wherein customers have put stones, insects in the food but were caught red-handed.” The release said a group of five to seven individuals created a public disturbance by falsely alleging that the food contained ‘a worm’ in it and then threatened to circulate the video on social media. The group, the release alleged, demanded Rs 25 lakh to not circulate the video. The founder said a police complaint against a group had been registered for attempting to ‘malign’ the brand image and to extort money. Earlier in the day, a couple of video clips were circulated on social networking sites alleging ‘a worm/insect’. The customer told the staffer identified as Mahesh “Can you see it?” and asked him “Who asked you to remove it from the dish?” Mahesh took a closer look at the ‘worm/insect’ in the Pongal served to the customer and apologised. Mahesh was seen in the video saying “a mistake has happened.” However, the identity of the customer was not established immediately.
