To counter the dominance of big production houses, actor Vinay Pathak took an unusual step—he donned the hat of a ticket seller at a cinema counter in Mumbai to personally sell tickets on the film’s opening day. When director Mehran Amrohi narrated the story to his mother, she simply responded with “Chidiya,” and the name instantly clicked. It reflects the simplicity and sincerity at the heart of the film.Flying Across CulturesAlthough it took years to see a theatrical release in India, Chidiya has already flown high overseas. Screenings in the Czech Republic, Russia, and the U.S. drew emotional responses from both children and adults, proving that emotion—not language—is the true currency of cinema.Vinay Pathak shared, “The film has travelled widely. Children of different languages and cultures have watched and unanimously loved it. That’s a matter of pride. It’s a privilege to work with a visionary like Mehran Amrohi, who wrote and directed the film.”Muscle Power vs. Heart PowerDespite international acclaim, Chidiya has struggled to find screens in India—a common reality for independent films. Yet, as the team affirms, even a limited release is enough if it finds its audience.Pathak added, “I’m donning the hat of a ticket seller at the box office and I’m hopeful that audiences will come. These are things beyond our control. You go to a multiplex and all the shows are for just one film. What can you do? These decisions are made by exhibitors.
