Title: Uttar Pradesh Aims for 500 Gigawatts of Green Energy by 2030, Boosting Solar Capacity
The government of Uttar Pradesh has signed several Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) to intensify its solar energy drive and achieve a monumental target of 500 gigawatts (GW) of green energy by the year 2030. Since 2017, under the leadership of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, the state’s solar power production has expanded significantly from 288 megawatts (MW) to more than 2,800 MW, with further growth ongoing.
The Solar Energy Policy 2022 establishes an interim objective of 2,200 MW, which will be realized through the development of solar parks across municipal corporations. Furthermore, solar grids are being installed along expressways and railway tracks, transforming infrastructure into a sustainable model. The Bundelkhand Expressway is slated to become India’s first solar expressway, marking a significant milestone in green infrastructure development. Ayodhya is also being developed as a solar city, with other municipal corporations like Noida following suit in a phased approach.
The government is actively promoting rooftop solar installations under the PM Surya Ghar Yojana. The target for rooftop panels in FY26 has been increased to 2.65 lakh units, demonstrating a commitment to expanding renewable energy sources across the state.
