Two Top Maoists Surrender; DGP Assures Them Employment

VIJAYAWADA: Two senior Maoists – Jorige Nagaraju, state zonal committee member and in-charge of East Bastar divisional committee, and his wife Jyoteeswari, divisional committee member, surrendered before AP DGP Harish Kumar Gupta in Vijayawada on Saturday.Nagaraju carries a reward of ₹20 lakh and Jyoteeswari ₹5 lakh. Addressing media, Harish Kumar Gupta disclosed that Nagaraju alias Kamalesh, a native of Poranki village in Penamaluru mandal of Krishna district, had gone underground and worked for the Maoist party for about 34 years. His wife Jyoteeswari alias Aruna, native of Kappaladoddi village in Gudur mandal of Krishna district, had worked with the Maoists for 30 years.The DGP said both Kamalesh and Aruna got frustrated with the policies of the central committee of Maoists. They realised that the Maoist ideology is on the wane.On the occasion, Harish Kumar Gupta handed over cheques of ₹20,000 each to the husband and wife towards their immediate needs.Police officials displayed weapons unearthed by their operational parties in Alluri Sitharama Raju district, comprising 18 weapons, including one AK 47, two BGLs, five SLRs, two INSAS rifles, 606 rounds of live ammunition, 37 kg of CORDEX wire and other equipment. The DGP pointed out that cheques totalling to ₹22 lakh have also been handed over to 13 underground cadres, including one divisional committee member Madakam Deva alias Bhagath, who recently surrendered before AP police. He recalled that during the last one year, ₹64 lakh had been given to 48 Maoist cadres of various ranks following their surrender.Harish Kumar Gupta said in the last one year, there have been five exchanges of fire incidents in AP, in which six Maoist cadre had been neutralised, including Uday, central committee member, Aruna and Jagan (state zonal committee members) and Ramesh (divisional committee secretary).The DGP appealed to all the underground cadres of Maoists to join the mainstream. He assured that AP police will facilitate their surrender as per the Surrender & Rehabilitation policy of the Andhra Pradesh government. Rewards on their name, along with house site and employment opportunities, will be provided to them.Harish Kumar Gupta disclosed that at present, 20 cadres, who are natives of AP, including 5 SZCMs, are still working for the CPI (Maoist) in various states. He made it clear that nothing can be achieved through violence.Those present on the occasion included IGP (Operations) Ch. Srikanth, NTR Vijayawada CP S.V. Rajashekhar Babu, IGP (Intelligence) Ramakrishna, and DIG (Visakhapatnam Range) Gopinath Jatti, apart from superintendents of police and officers of other cadres.
