Nellore:Two persons were killed and six others injured when a mini truck rammed into a stationary tipper lorry on the National Highway near Nayudupalem in Kodavalur mandal in the early hours of Monday.The deceased were identified as Madhava Rao (52) and S.K. Hussain (48), both from Chennai. Police said the victims were returning from a wedding in Kavali to Chennai when the accident occurred.There were eight passengers in the vehicle. Three suffered serious injuries, while three others sustained minor injuries. The injured were rushed to a private hospital in Nellore for treatment. The bodies of the deceased were shifted to Nellore Government General Hospital for post-mortem.Police registered a case and launched an investigation into the incident.3 dead, 10 injured in Tanakal accidentAnantapur:Three persons were killed and ten others suffered serious injuries when a tempo traveller collided head-on with an RTC bus near Mandlipalli Mitta in Tanakal mandal in Satya Sai district on Monday.Kadiri DSP J. Siva Narayana Swamy said the accident occurred around 9:30 am when a tempo traveller from Karnataka coming from Madanapalle towards Kadiri tried to overtake a lorry and rammed into an APSRTC bus coming from the opposite direction.In the mishap, a passenger, Anasuyamma, 55, died on the spot, while ten other passengers sustained injuries and were immediately shifted to the Government Hospital in Anantapur for treatment. Two more victims, Jahnavi, 6, and Manikanta, the tempo traveller driver, succumbed to their injuries while undergoing treatment. The DSP said a case was registered based on complaints by the victims, and bodies were handed over to family members after the postmortem.Tension in Karedu as police foil farmers’ protest against land acquisitionNellore:Tense situation prevailed in Karedu village of Ulavapadu mandal on Monday after police prevented members of farmers’ associations and Left organisations from staging the ‘Chalo Karedu’ protest against alleged forced land acquisition for the Indosol company.Police placed several leaders under house arrest in the morning and deployed heavy security in and around the village. Despite restrictions, groups of farmers and activists managed to reach the Karedu ramp and attempted to march towards the village, raising slogans in solidarity with local farmers.At the ramp, police intercepted the march and arrested CPI(M) state general secretary and Tenant Farmers’ Association state vice-president V. Srinivasa R along with several other leaders.Police cited lack of permission for the rally, leading to heated arguments as protesters insisted they were only meeting people. The leaders, including Moolam Ramesh, M. Mohan Rao, Gogula Srinivasulu and DYFI activists, were detained and shifted into police vehicles.A large number of women also joined the agitation, defying restrictions and shouting slogans. Clashes and scuffles broke out at multiple points, with police struggling to disperse the crowds. Women protesters were also taken into custody.While Srinivasa Rao was shifted to Valetivaripalem police station, others were taken to Kandukur, Singarayakonda, nd nearby police stations.2 held for shooting man with country-made gunVisakhapatnam:Two persons were arrested for shooting a man with a country-made weapon under the One Town police station limits in the old town of Visakhapatnam late on Sunday evening.The police said on Sunday at about 10 pm, Chepala Rajesh (28), a resident of Chilakapeta in One Town in Visakhapatnam, had consumed liquor along with Dora Nooka Raju (of the same area) near Chilakapeta Arch and quarrelled over business deals. Later both of them dispersed.They returned to Chilakapeta Arch at 11.30 pm and quarrelled once again. Nooka Raju brought his friend Dileep. During the quarrel, Nooka Raju fired at Rajesh’s abdomen with a country-made weapon and, along with Dileep, fled from the spot.Rajesh, who sustained one pellet injury, was shifted to King George Hospital for treatment, and his condition was said to be stable. Police immediately took up the investigation and arrested Nooka Raju (A1) and Dlieep (A2) within a few hours. The crime weapon was seized, and its source was being verified.The reason for the quarrel is said to be old disputes regarding coal theft and sales at the port. The role of one police constable, S Naidu, who has been in desertion since December 2024, is being ascertained.Central panel for Polavaram-Banachela project soonVijayawada:The Andhra Pradesh government will soon decide on three senior officials to be recommended to the Centre for constituting a committee on the Polavaram–Banakachela project after consulting Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu.The names under consideration are water resources special chief secretary G. Sai Prasad, engineer-in-chief K. Narasimha Murthy, and advisor M. Venkateswara Rao. However, their inclusion is subject to the Chief Minister’s approval.Amid a dispute with Telangana over the sharing of 200 tmc ft of floodwater annually by diverting it to the project—estimated to cost ₹81,000 crore for the benefit of farmers in the Rayalaseema region—the Centre has called for a meeting with experts and senior officials from Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and the Union Ministry of Water Resources.
