TTD’s ‘Divya Oushadha Vanam’ At Tirumala To Conserve Medicinal Plants

TIRUPATI: Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) has decided to develop a Divya Oushadha Vanam – a medicinal plants’ garden – spread over 3.90 acres of land in Tirumala with a budget of `4.25 crore. The Oushadha Vanam will conserve rare and endangered medicinal plant species. According to TTD officials, the initiative is being undertaken in line with the directions of Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu to safeguard medicinal plant wealth and promote traditional systems of medicine. Seshachalam forests are known to be a natural habitat for several rare medicinal species, many of which are under threat due to changing environmental conditions. The Divya Oushadha Vanam is envisaged as a lifeline for such plants by providing a protected and scientifically planned space for their growth and conservation. The primary objective of the project is to preserve medicinal plants while also creating awareness within the public about their importance. TTD officials say the garden will help familiarise devotees, students, researchers and nature enthusiasts with the role of medicinal plants in Indian traditional medicine and their relevance to human health and environmental balance. The project is also expected to contribute to biodiversity conservation in the ecologically sensitive Tirumala Hills. The Divya Oushadha Vanam will have 13 theme-based sections, presenting medicinal and sacred plant varieties in an organised manner. These include Deha Chikitsa Vanam, Sugandha Vanam, Pavitra Vanam, Prasada Vanam, Pooja Dravya Vanam, Jeevarasi Vanam, Kalpavriksha Dhamam, Oushadha Kund, Mulika Vanam, Rutu Vanam and Visesha Vriksha Vanam. Each section is designed to highlight the spiritual, medicinal and ecological significance of different plant groups, offering visitors both devotional and educational value. The site is near the Garudadri Nagar toll gate at Tirumala. Officials said the location has been chosen for its accessibility and suitability for plantation activities. Works on the Oushadha Vanam will begin next month, with phased planting, landscaping and development of basic infrastructure. In addition to the plantation, TTD plans to provide visitor-friendly facilities, such as parking and essential amenities. Divya Oushadha Vanam is targeted for completion by the end of next year, after which it will be opened to public.
