Hyderabad: The Rachakonda road safety wing and traffic police said they had strengthened enforcement of traffic rules to reduce accident severity, curb dangerous driving practices and enhance commuter safety across major corridors, including the ORR.Rachakonda police commissioner G. Sudheer Babu said the commissionerate recorded 3,219 road accidents in 2025, resulting in 659 fatalities and 2,867 injuries. On the ORR alone, 80 deaths were reported across 76 fatal accident cases. “In response, traffic enforcement wings acted aggressively against violations such as wrong-side driving, overspeeding, riding without helmets, triple riding, seatbelt violations, signal jumping, mobile phone usage while driving and drunk driving,” he said. During the year, lakhs of cases were booked under the Motor Vehicles Act, thousands of driving licences were suspended, and several repeat offenders were imprisoned based on court orders. Counselling sessions were also conducted regularly to sensitise violators about the consequences of unsafe driving behaviour. The commissioner added that the road safety wing also enhanced surveillance and emergency response on accident-prone stretches, intensified patrolling on the ORR, and implemented engineering and signage-based interventions to improve overall driver safety. Alongside enforcement, awareness remained a key pillar of the road safety strategy. Traffic Wing–I conducted 1,861 awareness programmes, reaching 1.75 lakh citizens, while Traffic Wing–II organised 2,408 sessions that educated 1.92 lakh people. These initiatives targeted schoolchildren, daily commuters, corporate employees and professional drivers.
