Veteran actor Kamal Haasan’s upcoming film Thug Life, scheduled for a grand release on June 5, has been banned in Karnataka following a controversial remark made by the actor about the Kannada language. During the film’s audio launch, Haasan stated that “Kannada is born out of Tamil,” triggering widespread backlash and protests across Karnataka. The Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce (KFCC) announced the ban on Friday, aligning with the sentiments of pro-Kannada groups such as the Karnataka Rakshana Vedike, who lodged a formal complaint accusing the actor of disrespecting Kannada pride and identity.Sa Ra Govindu, a senior representative of KFCC, confirmed the chamber’s decision, stating, “There is no apology from Kamal Haasan. The pressure from Kannada organizations is mounting, and we stand with them. We will not allow the film’s release in Karnataka.”Reacting to the escalating controversy, producer Mohan Vadlapatla — who is also the Joint Secretary of the Telugu Film Chamber of Commerce — acknowledged the seriousness of the situation. “The issue has definitely turned serious, and trade bodies are planning such bans,” he said. “However, the filmmakers will definitely approach the relevant courts to seek relief. It’s too early to comment further,” he added, keeping his statement brief.Vadlapatla further noted that while trade bodies like KFCC hold considerable influence, resolving such issues amicably through dialogue is crucial. “Karnataka is a major market for Tamil films. How the producers handle this dispute will be key to the film’s release and reception,” he emphasized.Earlier, KFCC had issued a 24-hour ultimatum demanding an apology from Kamal Haasan, failing which they promised action. With no apology forthcoming, the chamber followed through on its decision. Now the matter would head to the courts, which will likely have the final say on whether Thug Life can be released in Karnataka on June 5 or not.
