Hyderabad: Telangana has emerged as the top-ranking major state in the country in terms of per capita income, according to the latest Handbook of Statistics on Indian States 2024-25 released by the Reserve Bank of India. With a per capita income of Rs 3,87,623, Telangana has outperformed several industrially-advanced states, including Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Haryana, Maharashtra and Kerala, underlining the State’s strong economic momentum. In dollar terms, Telangana’s per capita income stands at $4,295, which is more than national per capita income of $2,777. It is on the edge of graduating to the upper middle group ($4,496 to $13,935) as per the World Bank’s Income Classification. Among major States, Telangana led the table ahead of Karnataka at Rs 3,80,906, Tamil Nadu at Rs 3,61,619, Haryana at Rs 3,53,182, Maharashtra at Rs 3,09,340 and Kerala at Rs 3,08,338. However, Delhi, categorised as a smaller state, recorded the highest per capita income in the country at Rs 4,93,024.The RBI data also showed a sharp rise in Telangana’s Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP), which increased to Rs 16.41 lakh crore in 2024-25, placing the state sixth nationally. Maharashtra retained the top position with a GSDP of Rs 45.32 lakh crore, followed by Uttar Pradesh at Rs 29.78 lakh crore, Karnataka at Rs 28.84 lakh crore, West Bengal at Rs 18.15 lakh crore and Rajasthan at Rs 17.04 lakh crore. The 2024-25 financial year marked the first full year of governance under Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy-led Congress government, which assumed office in December 2023. The improved economic indicators during this period have been viewed as a morale booster for the new dispensation. In 2023-24, when the previous BRS government was in power for most of the year, Telangana’s GSDP stood at Rs 14,61,835 crore. Under the Congress government, the figure rose to Rs 16,40,901 crore, reflecting an increase of more than Rs 1.79 lakh crore within a year.Officials noted that growth was recorded across key sectors, including agriculture and allied activities, mining, manufacturing, utilities and trade-related services, suggesting balanced expansion rather than reliance on a single sector. The rise in per capita income from Rs 3,47,714 in 2023-24 to Rs 3,87,623 in 2024-25 further highlighted the pace of economic improvement.Finance department officials attributed the performance to a combination of welfare-driven governance and sustained focus on development. They said the government managed to continue major social schemes while also encouraging growth in industry, agriculture and the services sector.Despite delays in approvals from the Centre for several large infrastructure and irrigation projects, Telangana maintained high growth levels. Analysts observed that the State’s ability to sustain economic momentum amid such constraints demonstrated the Revanth Reddy-led government’s capacity to blend welfare commitments with economic development, positioning Telangana as a notable performer among major States.
