South Western Railway Posts Rs 2,972 Cr Revenue in April–July FY25

The South Western Railway (SWR) has posted a strong financial performance in the first four months of the 2025–26 fiscal year, with both freight and passenger segments showing robust growth. According to a press release from the zone, SWR recorded a gross revenue of Rs 2,972 crore from April to July 2025, reflecting an increase of Rs 338 crore over the Rs 2,634 crore earned during the same period last year. Freight traffic remained the key growth driver, generating Rs 1,716 crore, while earnings from passenger traffic rose to Rs 1,064 crore. A total of 59 million passengers travelled on SWR’s network during this period, up from 55 million in the corresponding months of 2024. Revenue from coaching services, including parcels and non-passenger trains, increased to Rs 113 crore from Rs 107 crore, while sundry income grew to Rs 79 crore from Rs 62 crore. In terms of freight movement, the zone achieved an originating freight loading of 16.27 million tonnes (MT), up 15.8% from 14.05 MT in the same period last year. This growth was credited to improved operational efficiency and enhanced coordination with industries. Iron ore remained the top commodity, with 6.41 MT transported, up from 5.54 MT last year. Steel traffic saw the highest surge, climbing 42.1% to 3.54 MT from 2.49 MT. Coal movement increased by 13.4% to 3.32 MT from 2.93 MT. Other sectors also witnessed gains: raw material loading for steel plants rose by 51.4% to 0.71 MT, fertilizer transport grew by 12.6% to 0.42 MT, and container traffic increased by 29.4% to 0.32 MT. “This consistent and broad-based performance highlights SWR’s commitment to financial prudence, improved service delivery, and strategic growth in both freight and passenger sectors,” the statement concluded.
