Soha Ali Khan Speaks Out on Gender Equality

Soha Ali Khan believes strongly in gender parity. In a recent YouTube video, the actress addressed the question of the continuing perception in society that life is somehow incomplete without having a son.Often in the limelight for her social media posts, Soha said “Even today among affluent families, well-educated families from all backgrounds, there is the expectation of a son.” Explaining this preoccupation with a male child, she said, “I have a daughter. I am very happy. Most people around me are also happy or say the right things. But there is a sense somewhere that maybe you have disappointed someone by not having had a son. Why? Because I feel that though women are going to work today, earning money, and are independent, they don’t carry the family name.” Talking about how this issue is playing out in her own life, Soha, the daughter of veteran actress Sharmila Tagore and legendary cricketer Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi, and the wife of actor Kunal Khemu, said, “When my daughter Inaya Naumi Khemu grows up and gets married, she may choose to keep her family name as I have done, or she may choose to take her husband’s name.” Noting that she doesn’t know who her daughter (now just 8 years old) will marry, or whether the institution of marriage will even exist by the time she’s old enough, Soha said, “That’s a separate conversation entirely but I know that lineage is perhaps where this comes from, and I suspect it is tied up with a little bit of male ego.”
