SIT Search Ends Without Breakthrough in Dharmasthala

Mangaluru: The Special Investigation Team’s (SIT) search at Spot No. 17 in Dharmasthala on Thursday ended without any breakthrough, as no human remains were found.Spot No. 17 lies on the other side of the bathing ghat, accessible via a road from Kanyadi. After travelling some distance along this road, the site is reached by passing through a plantation. The SIT team, accompanied by the whistleblower who identified the location, began the search around 11 am.Labourers and a mini excavator were deployed, and digging continued until evening. With no remains recovered, the operation was called off. Later, the team moved to conduct a spot mahazar near the old bus stand in Dharmasthala.Meanwhile, in a separate development, Kavalamoordur resident Nitin Devadiga has approached Punjalakatte police seeking a probe into the disappearance of his 17-year-old sister, Hemalatha, who went to Dharmasthala temple in 2012 and never returned home. Devadiga said recent developments in the temple town have prompted him to seek a fresh investigation. The SIT was set up by the state government after a July 3 complaint from a former sanitation worker alleging that several bodies had been secretly buried in Dharmasthala. So far, the SIT has excavated 17 locations, with human remains recovered at only two — Spot No. 6 and beneath a tree near Spot No 11.
