NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Monday agreed to hear a petition filed by Ali Khan Mahmudabad, head of the Political Science department at Ashoka University, challenging his recent arrest over social media posts concerning Operation Sindoor.A bench comprising Chief Justice B.R. Gavai and Justice Augustine George Masih took note of the matter following submissions by senior advocate Kapil Sibal, who appeared on behalf of Mahmudabad.“He has been arrested for a patriotic statement. Please list it during the day,” Sibal urged. The Chief Justice responded, saying, “Please list it tomorrow or the day after.”Mahmudabad was arrested on Sunday following two FIRs filed under serious charges, including those related to endangering the sovereignty and integrity of India, in connection with his social media commentary on Operation Sindoor. The Haryana State Commission for Women had recently sent a notice to the associate professor questioning his remarks, though Mahmudabad had maintained that they were “misunderstood” and asserted that he had exercised his fundamental right to freedom of speech.
