Rs 2,000 Notes Resurface in Hyderabad's Philatelic Circle

Hyderabad: Days after Hyderabad police busted a gang for selling demonetised currency, a fresh incident has come to light involving a member of a city-based philatelic association. The individual reportedly shared pictures of demonetised currency notes of Rs 2,000 in a WhatsApp group to sell them. The pictures went viral on social media on Saturday and triggered police action.According to police, the person posed as a philatelic society member and posted images of the withdrawn currency, asking whether such notes could still be exchanged and saying that interested candidates could contact him to purchase those notes. The message quickly went viral on social media on Saturday, drawing the attention of law enforcement agencies. Police are now trying to trace the sender by coordinating with the organisers of the Hyderabad Philatelic Society. Preliminary reports suggest the individual may also be involved in collecting and selling ancient coins and postal stamps to interested customers. This incident follows closely on the heels of a crackdown by the Hyderabad task force, which recently arrested four individuals — Syed Muzammil, Amzad Khan, Palthi Bhaskar and Shaik Naseema — for possessing Rs 55 lakh worth of demonetised currency. In the aftermath of that bust, police have intensified their surveillance, which reportedly led to the detection of the latest attempt to promote demonetised currency notes of Rs 2,000 through social media platforms.
