RANCHI: Taking suo-moto cognizance over the incident in Palamu where a woman was tonsured, garlanded with shoes and left in the jungle to die after being brutally beaten up by the villagers allegedly for refusing to marry a man of her family’s choice in Jogidih village, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has issued a notice to the Jharkhand government seeking a detailed report in this regard.

TNIE was the first to report the incident. According to the notice issued to the Chief Secretary (CS) and the Director General of Police (DGP) on May 18, the commission has sought a detailed report within four weeks including the status of the FIR registered by the police, medical treatment of the victim and compensation if any, granted to her. 

“The contents of the media report, if true, amounts to a violation of the human rights of the victim at the behest of a village Panchayat. The perpetrators of such an immoral and unlawful act cannot be allowed to go scot-free in a civilized society governed by the rule of law,” sated an official communiqué by NHRC.The authorities are expected to explain in the report the status of the installment of the compensation given to the victim, who is eligible for the same as per the provisions of the Scheduled Castes/Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, it said. 

The official communiqué further added that they are also expected to intimate the status of any counselling provided to the victim, who suffered the trauma of physical pain, humiliation, and social stigma. The Commission would also like to know about the action taken against the delinquent officers, responsible for the tragedy, it said.
