HYDERABAD: A head constable died and three others, including two cops, were injured when a lorry driven by a drunk driver rammed into their patrol vehicle on National Highway-44 in Peddashapur in Shamshabad, at around 9.45 pm on Saturday. The driver was found 10 times over the permissible alcohol limit.Shamshabad inspector K. Narender Reddy identified the deceased as Vijay Kumar, and the three injured as Manda Yadaiah and Pasha from the Highway mobile traffic patrol police, and the driver in another accident, Bajrangi. The incident occurred after the cops had gone to assist and investigate an accident. On Saturday, the police received a dial 100 call reporting that a Maharashtra-registered lorry had veered off the road and into bushes. Vijay Kumar, who was on night duty during that time, had gone to the spot, along with the highway patrol police personnel Yadaiah and Pasha. Two patrol vehicles, one of the Shamshabad police and the other of the highway patrol police, were stationed on the left side of the road. As the three cops stood a few metres ahead, talking to the driver of the Maharashtra lorry about the accident; a Karnataka-registered lorry, allegedly being driven rashly, rammed into the two police vehicles. As a result, Vijay Kumar received a severe head injury, and his left leg got crushed. After the Shamshabad police learnt of the incident, they reached the spot and shifted Vijay Kumar and the injured to a private hospital in Madhapur. Vijay Kumar was declared brought dead. His body was shifted to the Shadnagar CHC for postmortem examination and was later handed over to his family. Vijay Kumar is survived by his wife, and two sons, 12 and 10 years old. At around 3.30 pm, Vijay Kumar’s last rites were performed at his native village in Shabad with government honours and a gun salute. Shamshabad ACP Srikanth Goud, inspector K. Narender Reddy, the police station’s staff members and Vijay’s batch members were present. Yadaiah, who received a leg fracture, is being treated at a private hospital in Madhapur and is stable. Pasha, who had received minor injuries, was discharged on Sunday morning. The lorry driver is being treated at another private hospital and is stable. Talking briefly at the hospital with Deccan Chronicle, Yadaiah’s wife said they were still coming to terms with the accident. “My husband needs some time to recover from what happened. We are glad he is stable,” she said. The Shamshabad police have arrested the lorry driver, Ramesh Kamble, who was allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol. His Blood Alcohol Content (BAC) level was 300mg/100ml when checked on the breathalyser after the accident. The permissible limit is 30. Another accident was reported on the same road on Sunday morning. K Mahender, a constable closely monitoring the area, said that accidents on the road are quite frequent. “The road has a downward slope, and heavy vehicles often speed through the stretch. A U-turn just ahead adds to the risk,” he said.
