Ranchi Diary | First giraffe in Ranchi zoo after 9-year wait

A six-year-old female northern giraffe, Misty, and a pair of silver pheasants have been brought to Bhagwan Birsa Biological Park in Ranchi as part of an inter-zoo animal exchange programme with Alipore Zoological Garden, Kolkata. Zoo authorities consider this a significant milestone. Northern giraffes are primarily found in protected areas across East and Central Africa, such as Kenya, South Sudan, Niger, and the Central African Republic. This significant addition marks the end of a nine-year attempt, during which technical hurdles delayed the introduction of giraffes to the Ranchi Zoo. The exchange took place on August 7.Ganga crosses danger mark in SahibganjAs the Ganga River crosses the danger mark in Sahibganj, all government and private schools located in the district’s flood-prone or low-lying areas have been closed till Tuesday. The Jharkhand police say the FIR, filed on the basis of a complaint by a temple priest, Kartik Nath Thakur, was registered for their entry into the inner sanctum on August 2 despite a restriction on the entry of VIP or VVIPs during the ‘Shravan’ month, when the temple sees a significant influx of devotees. Further investigation into the matter is currently under way.Mukesh RanjanOur correspondent in Jharkhandmukesh.r@newindianexpress.com
