ADILABAD: Revenue minister Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy on Wednesday criticised the previous BRS government for neglecting the issuance of ration cards to the poor, and said the Congress government is fulfilling its promise to issue new cards. He added that issuing new ration cards will be a continuous process and that people need not worry. He said the state government is implementing various welfare measures to empower women financially, with the goal of enabling one crore women to become crorepatis (millionaires). Srinivas Reddy was speaking after planting a sapling as part of Vana Mahotsavam at Government Degree College, Nelakondapalli, in the Paleru Assembly constituency, Khammam district. He later distributed newly sanctioned ration cards to beneficiaries and laid the foundation stone for several roads in Nelakondapalli mandal. He said the government is implementing welfare schemes to give bharosa (assurance) to the poor and bring smiles to their faces, and promised to make women “Mahalakshmi.” He recalled that the state is providing free bus travel for women under the Mahalakshmi scheme and that Indiramma houses are being sanctioned in women’s names. The minister said the state has extended ₹25,000 crore in interest free loans to 65 lakh women in self help groups so far, and that the eligibility age for joining SHGs has been set at 15-65 years. He added that funds will be released every Monday based on construction progress. District collector Anudeep Durishetti said 19,690 new ration cards have been issued in Khammam district. State Irrigation Development Corporation chairman Muvva Vijayababu also spoke.
