Visakhapatnam: Visakhapatnam city police have registered a case following reports of an alleged kidney trafficking attempt involving a financially distressed man from Eluru and a suspected fake doctor from Odisha.The incident came to light when Rangababu, a resident of Eluru, arrived in Visakhapatnam with intentions to sell his kidney due to severe financial difficulties. According to police sources, an unknown individual contacted Rangababu, claiming to be a doctor from Odisha and allegedly facilitating the illegal organ transaction. The suspicious activity was reported to authorities when the lodge owner and other residents where the conversation was taking place alerted the Fourth Town Police Station. A case has been registered. Visakhapatnam city police commissioner Sankhabrata Bagchi confirmed that they have found messages from an individual identified as Anand. “We are currently verifying whether he is a fake doctor or a genuine medical practitioner. We will arrest him and conduct a thorough interrogation to uncover more details about this operation.” He emphasised that further information would be shared with the public once the investigation progresses. “According to our law, specifically the Transplantation of Human Organs Act, no one can sell their organs. Even if I wanted to donate my kidney to my own family members, it cannot be done without proper authorisation,” he explained. He further clarified that in emergency situations requiring organ transplantation, a designated committee evaluates each case and determines whether the procedure should proceed, ensuring all legal and medical protocols are followed.
