Hyderabad: While many areas in the city continue to receive water supply, low water pressure has become a growing concern for residents across several localities, especially in Kukatpally, Pragati Nagar, Nizampet, LB Nagar, Madhapur, Shalibanda, and others.“First of all, the water timings are very short and insufficient. On top of that, there’s been low pressure for almost a year,” said Sai Teja, a resident of Pragati Nagar, Kukatpally. “I have been raising complaints since last year, but they just close them without actually fixing the problem. Every time I ask for an update, they say repair work is going on. This is their standard reply every time,” he added. Another resident from the same area, who didn’t want to be named, said, “We get water on paper but not in reality. The pressure is too low to even fill one drum properly.” “Ours is an apartment complex with 12 flats. We are registered under the Free Water Supply (FWS) scheme, 20 KL per household, so a total of 240 KL should be free of cost,” said Mahesh G. K. from Kavuri Hills, Guttalabegumpet, Madhapur. “But we don’t even get half that much, and the pressure is very low. We end up booking tankers every alternate day,” he added. In Nizampet, local resident Anand Vardhan said that while supply is regular and comes every alternate day, the pressure has noticeably dropped compared to previous months. In Shalibanda, Mohammad said, “Sometimes we just leave the tap open, hoping the water pressure will increase. But most days, we have to manage with what little comes through. It’s been like this for months.” A source from the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply & Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) explained that one key reason for low pressure is increased demand without commensurate upgrades to the network. “Many connections were given years ago based on the population at that time. As more houses have come up and dependency has increased, they are still reliant on the same infrastructure,” the source said. Residents have also taken to social media, tagging the Water Board and local officials to demand adequate pressure. Water Board officials noted that low-lying areas usually receive better pressure, while elevated areas face challenges. They added that the use of illegal motors by some residents disrupts distribution and reduces pressure for others. “Our vigilance teams are working on this, and whenever we come across such cases, we take immediate corrective action,” an official said.
