Hyderabad: HYDRAA commissioner A.V. Ranganath on Monday felicitated DRF staffers who had rescued a man who was attempting to die by suicide on Durgam Cheruvu cable bridge on Friday. DRF staffers Tirupati Yadav, Santosh Chari and Mohammed Imran, along with traffic police who were at the spot, kept the person talking to distract him and pulled him back to safety. The commissioner appreciated their efforts in saving the man’s life.TG Haj panel plea to extend deadlineHyderabad:Telangana Haj Committee has requested the Haj Committee of India to extend the deadline for applications for the pilgrimage next year. July 31 is the last date to submit online applications.Telangana Haj committee executive officer Sajjad Ali in a virtual meeting told the Haj Committee of India officials that many potential applicants were still waiting for their passports. There are many others who could not apply because of technical issues.So far, over 10,000 applications have been received from Telangana Haj-2026. Telangana Haj Committee Chairman Syed Afzal Biyabani has appealed to all intending pilgrims to apply as the deadline is nearing and utilise the free application process at its office in Nampally.Clear stagnant water, SCR GM tells officialsHyderabad:SCR general manager Sanjay Kumar Srivastava on Monday directed officials to prevent water accumulation at Road underbridges (RUBs) during the monsoon season. He was speaking at a meeting on safety in train operations.Srivastava asked officials to install pumping systems and water gauges. Safety measures at level crossing (LC) gates were also reviewed during a meeting, with special attention to vulnerable locations. Officials were instructed to conduct regular inspections, counsel staff, and strictly enforce safety protocols.He asked officials to ensure safe and uninterrupted train operations during the monsoon, intensified patrolling was mandated across vulnerable tracks, bridges, and zones with heavy rainfall. He emphasized that all officers and staff must remain on high alert to prevent unsafe conditions.Power use in monsoon rising, officials alertedHyderabad: Energy secretary Navin Mittal has alerted power officials to remain vigilant amid a significant rise in electricity demand in the monsoon. The state has witnessed a 14.05 per cent increase in peak power demand, surging from 13,541 MW on July 31, 2024, to 15,443 MW on July 16, 2025, setting a record for the month.Addressing southern discom officials, including Musharraf Faruqui, chairman and managing director, through a video conference, Mittal emphasised the critical importance of uninterrupted power supply during this period of heightened consumption. Greater Hyderabad’s industrial, commercial, and domestic sectors continue to draw substantial electricity, while the agricultural sector operated millions of motors nonstop to support the paddy sowing season.Mittal underscored the unique challenges posed by the monsoon, specifically cautioning staff to be present at their workplaces during rainfall to swiftly address any disruptions and ensure consistent power availability.Free coaching for minority studentsHyderabad:The Telangana Minorities Study Circle, working under the department of winorities welfare, has announced a free four-month basic foundation course to help minority students prepare for state and Central government job exams.
