HYDERABAD: Turning the tiny patterns of pollen into fabric designs is now a patented idea from Osmania University (OU). Shivani Chilukuri, an MSc student, and Dr A. Vijaya Bhasker Reddy, assistant professor in the department of botany, have developed Paragamanjari, a method that uses plant science to create pollen-inspired motifs for the textile industry. It was developed at the university’s Palynology and Plant Systematics Laboratory in the department of botany. The Paragamanjari method takes inspiration from palynology, the study of pollen grains, and converts their microscopic shapes into creative, usable fabric patterns. These motifs can be adapted into various textile layouts, including gradation, half-drop, medallion, one-direction, turnover, two-directional and panel arrangements, which make them suitable for different styles and purposes. This process blends botanical science with textile technology and allows nature’s microscopic details to be incorporated into fabrics in a way that is both creative and practical. The inventors said the patent recognises the value of combining research with industrial design and could encourage new directions in sustainable, bio-inspired fashion. The Indian Patent Office granted Patent No. 569655 on August 7, 2025, less than a year after the application was filed on September 13, 2024, which makes it one of the fastest approvals. The university said the achievement portrays its commitment to research that connects traditional knowledge with modern applications. The patent will remain valid for 20 years from the filing date, with renewals due annually starting in 2026.
