Karwar: A mechanised fishing boat capsized off the Murudeshwar coast of Uttara Kannada district on Wednesday morning, resulting in one death and another person reported missing. According to a complaint filed by Nagesh, a resident of Sonarakeri in Murudeshwar, the incident occurred around 5.45 am, shortly after they had set out for fishing from the Murudeshwar beach. Nagesh, along with his nephews Venkatesh and Anand, and a family acquaintance, Madeva Narayan Harikant, had boarded a mechanised gill-net boat named Navagraha, registered under Nagesh’s elder brother. As they moved about 100 meters into the Arabian Sea, a strong wave struck the boat, causing it to overturn. All four occupants were thrown into the water. While Nagesh, Anand, and Madeva initially tried swimming back to shore, another large wave separated them. Nagesh and Anand managed to reach the shore safely, but Venkatesh went missing in the water. Madeva, who had swallowed a large amount of seawater, was rescued in an unconscious state and rushed to RNS Hospital in Murudeshwar. However, doctors declared him dead around 6 am. Madeva was around 50 years old and a resident of Hiridomi, Mavalli. Police told Deccan Chronicle that a search operation is underway to trace Venkatesh. Murudeshwar police have registered a case.
