Hyderabad: In a tragic incident of alleged medical negligence, two premature babies died at Vijaya Laxmi Hospital in Ibrahimpatnam, on Sunday morning reportedly after untrained nurses allegedly performed a C-section surgery under the guidance of a doctor via a video call. The Ibrahimpatnam police registered a case against a private gynaecologist working with Vijaya Laxmi Hospital, including the staff involved and the Rangareddy District Medical and Health Officer (DMHO) visited the hospital and sealed it. According to the family, the attending doctor, Anusha Reddy, who was not present at the hospital, guided the nurses via a WhatsApp video call to carry out the operation. The woman, with a five-month-old pregnancy, arrived at the hospital with severe labour pains, and reportedly suffered heavy bleeding during the procedure. By the time the doctor arrived at the hospital, both babies had been declared dead.Police said Butti Ganesh, a conductor with the RTC, and Keerthi, from Eliminedu village in Ibrahimpatnam, have been married for seven years. Following an IVF treatment, Keerthi was declared pregnant in January 2025. Keerthi had been visiting the same hospital for the past five months for regular check-ups. Her family stated it was a much-awaited pregnancy after six years, and she had taken all necessary precautions. A month ago, she experienced pain and visited the hospital, where she was sent back after being given glucose.Around 4 am on Sunday, she again experienced pain. Her family rushed her to the hospital after contacting the hospital staff. They claimed that repeated attempts to reach the doctor were unsuccessful, and she only joined through a video call.Speaking to the media, Keerthi said she was given an injection by an RMP and admitted to the hospital. She continued to bleed, and despite repeatedly asking about the doctor, the nurses kept saying she was on her way. “After my babies were taken out, the doctor came and said they died due to a blood clot. She did not give me any treatment,” Keerthi said. Her husband and relatives protested outside the hospital, demanding justice and action against the doctor and nurses. They blamed the medical staff’s negligence for the tragic deaths of the twins.Detailing the ordeal, Keerthi’s husband Butti Ganesh said, “About 20 days ago, the doctor suggested stitches to prevent any risk of the foetuses sliding down. Since that day, she started bleeding. Though it appeared as mere spotting, she was also in pain, and we consulted the doctor. After a scan, she said the babies were fine and the heartbeats were good. Even after we returned home, the bleeding continued. We consulted her again last Saturday, and she suggested further scans and administered glucose. On Sunday, the pain intensified, and we rushed her to the hospital. I wasn’t even sure whether the nurses were trained to perform a surgery; all I knew was that my wife was in pain, bleeding, and struggling.”Keerthi was moved to the hospital, where staff informed the family that Dr V. Anusha Reddy was not available in person and that Keerthi would be treated by the available staff under the doctor’s remote guidance via phone. “The moment they inserted their hand, there was blood everywhere, and the fetuses were expelled,” said Ganesh.
