Hyderabad: A hands-on workshop was organised by the Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (Nims) in collaboration with the Endocrine Society of India (ESI) on Sunday to train young endocrinologists effectively manage Type 1 diabetes with insulin pump therapy.A notable highlight of the event was the state government’s initiative to provide insulin pumps free of cost to children with Type 1 diabetes.Dr K.V.S. Harikumar, secretary of the Endocrine Society of India, said, “This partnership between clinical excellence and government support demonstrates how innovation in diabetes care can be made accessible and impactful.”The workshop was headed by Dr Sumana Kunnuru and Dr Beatrice Anne, faculty organisers from the Nims’ department of endocrinology. Sessions covered pump initiation, troubleshooting, patient selection and long-term follow-up strategies.Dr Narendra Gets Award for SurgeriesHyderabad: Director of medical education Dr Narendra Are was presented an award of appreciation for his contribution to the field of paediatric thoracic surgery. The award was presented by the Society of Paediatric Thoracic Surgery (SPTS), a section of the Indian Association of Pediatric Surgeons (IAPS).The society noted his instrumental role in establishing the thoracic chapter of IAPS in 2006, which laid the foundation for advancing paediatric thoracic surgery across India. The award was presented during the inaugural SPTSCON held at the IRCAD India Centre, Sri Aurobindo Institute of Medical Sciences, in Indore.Over more than two decades, Dr Are has performed thousands of minimally invasive life-saving surgeries for children, influencing the trajectory of pediatric thoracic surgery in India. Health minister Damodar Rajanarsimha commended his exceptional service to the state and the nation.
