NHRC Seeks Report On Tirupati Mayor Poll Violence

Nellore:The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has sought a detailed report from the Andhra Pradesh DGP on the violence that erupted during the Tirupati deputy mayor election on February 3, acting on a complaint filed by MP M. Gurumurthy.Gurumurthy alleged that miscreants attacked his bus carrying party corporators, smashing windows, assaulting the driver, and deflating tyres in the presence of police. He claimed several accused were not named in the FIR, raising doubts over the investigation. The NHRC, which has reviewed his complaint, media reports and High Court directions, has directed the DGP to submit a status report within six weeks.Earlier, the DGP reported that 133 police personnel, CCTV cameras and drones were deployed, yet the attack occurred just 400 metres from the polling station, forcing postponement. Elections were later held under heavy police security on February 4.The Commission is also examining allegations that over 17 accused were shielded during the probe. Gurumurthy termed the incident as political vendetta, abuse of power and an attack on democracy.
