Hyderabad: To ensure speedy redressal of grievances and accountability of public authorities, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) held a two-day open hearing and camp at Dr. Marri Chenna Reddy Human Resource Development Institute (MCRHRDI) on July 28 and 29.On Monday, the hearings were conducted by two division benches. Division Bench-1 was chaired by Justice V. Ramasubramanian, Chairperson of NHRC. Division Bench-2 was headed by Justice Bidyut Ranjan Sarangi and Vijaya Bharathi Sayani.In addition, a full bench was constituted to hear selected cases of public importance, mostly comprising suo moto cases cognisance taken by the commission. These cases included matters concerning caste based discrimination, social boycott, custodial and police excesses and violations of the right to life, dignity, liberty and livelihood.On Tuesday, the NHRC members will hold a meeting with senior officers of the state government and also interact with NGO’s and members of civil societies.Chief Secretary K. Ramakrishna Rao welcomed the Chairperson and other members. Senior officials from the government were in attendance to assist the commission, including Ravi Gupta, special chief secretary (home), Mahesh Bhagwat, additional DGP, Vikram Singh Mann, additional commissioner, Ch. Priyanka, special commissioner I&PR, district collectors, SPs and officers from concerned departments. Their participation was aimed at ensuring prompt responses and coordinated action on the matters raised.The commission adjudicated the hearings in a time-bound, transparent and empathetic manner, issuing directions to concerned authorities. In cases where violations were established, the commission also recommended and awarded monetary compensation to victims.
