New Law to Protect Farmers: Tummala

Warangal: The Congress government is a farmer-friendly government that has always stood by and supported farmers, working diligently for their well-being, said Agriculture Minister Tummala Nageswara Rao. He announced that a new farmers’ law will soon be introduced to prevent injustice and protect them from being cheated by fake seeds. The minister, accompanied by panchayat raj minister Seethakka and Telangana Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Commission chairman M. Kondanda Reddy, distributed compensation cheques worth Rs 3.8 crore to 950 farmers from Wazedu, Venkatapuram, and Kannaigudem mandals. These farmers had suffered losses across 1,521 acres of maize crops. The event was held at the ITDA Skill Development Centre in Mulugu district on Monday. It may be recalled that during the last kharif season, farmers in several mandals of Mulugu district suffered massive losses after planting genetically modified (GM) maize seeds supplied by multinational companies. Despite promises of high yields, the seeds resulted in poor harvests, prompting farmers to protest and demand accountability. Responding swiftly, the government intervened and initiated steps to secure compensation from the concerned seed companies.Speaking at the event, Nageswara Rao said that upon learning about the crop losses, he contacted district collector T.S. Divakar and instructed him to assess the number of affected farmers and take immediate action. Within five months, the government ensured compensation was secured through coordinated efforts by district officials and multinational companies, resulting in relief for 950 farmers.“The people’s government aims to make farmers kings,” the minister declared, adding that Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy is working tirelessly toward this goal. He also highlighted ongoing development efforts in agency areas, including improved road connectivity and infrastructure. Recalling past development, he mentioned the construction of roads and bridges from Lotapeta Gandhi to Bhadrachalam, and assured continued support to Minister Seethakka for her initiatives in the region.Mulugu district, he said, boasts unique tourist attractions found nowhere else in the country. Plans are underway to develop the Karregutta region into a tourist destination.Criticising the previous BRS government, Nageswara Rao alleged that it deceived farmers with false promises merely for electoral gains. In contrast, the Congress government, under its Indiramma Rajyam initiative, is delivering tangible welfare benefits to farmers.Panchayat Raj Minister Seethakka urged farmers in agency areas not to trust middlemen and risk being cheated. She advised them to begin cultivation only after seeds supplied by multinational companies have been properly inspected by authorities.
