Namratha Took Rural RMPs' Help to Buy Newborn Babies

Hyderabad: Luring registered medical practitioners (RMPs) in rural areas, Universal Fertility Centre organiser Namratha and her staff allegedly influenced impoverished women in tribal hamlets to purchase newborn babies from them.Police suspect that Namratha, who was illegally running the fertility centre without valid permission, conducted free medical camps in villages to identify women and collect information about tribal women. Officials filed a fresh petition seeking extended police custody of the accused to question her about recent developments, and that several new complaints had been received against Namratha for her alleged illegal activities. Police have also seized the bank accounts of Namratha and her staff. Investigators suspect that Namratha lured several tribal women from hamlets in Telangana to purchase newborn babies, who were later handed over to couples under the pretext of surrogacy. Sources said a police team has obtained some details of the women through local intelligence. “We will verify the details of the women located in tribal hamlets. Namratha maintained separate records — one for couples approaching her seeking surrogacy, and another for women lured into surrogacy from rural areas. We also suspect that she collected huge sums of money as fees from the couples and engaged in cash transactions,” police officials said. Police also suspect that RMPs in rural localities across several districts of Telangana helped Namratha and her staff in carrying out the alleged illegal surrogacy operations. Some RMPs have reportedly been identified and are likely to be questioned for further leads in the case.
