Monsoon Makes Forceful Entry into Coastal Karnataka

Mangaluru: The monsoon has made a forceful entry into Coastal Karnataka, bringing with it heavy rains that have flooded low-lying areas, damaged infrastructure, and disrupted daily life across Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts.As it rained heavily, Udupi and Dakshina Kannada district administrations had declared holiday for Anganwadis on Monday. In Mangaluru, several areas including Mahaveera Circle and Jyothi Circle were inundated, while the bathing ghat in Kukke Subrahmanya temple town was also submerged. As a precaution, the district administration has declared a holiday for all schools and PU colleges, government, private, and aided institutions, on May 27 and 28, following a red alert in the region. Dakshina Kannada district recorded significant damage. According to officials two houses were completely damaged and 22 partially damaged, and over 250 electricity poles and 75 km of roads were affected. Teams from the SDRF have been deployed in Mangaluru and Subrahmanya, while the NDRF is stationed in Puttur. In Moodabidri, a group of tourists stranded on a rock at Eragundi Falls was rescued by locals after water levels rose suddenly. In Udupi district, 17 houses were partially damaged. With the red alert in place, District In-charge Minister Lakshmi Hebbalkar instructed officials to intensify precautionary measures and prepare for possible evacuations in flood-prone areas. She also called for 24/7 helplines and relief centres across all taluks. Dakshina Kannada’s District In-charge Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao, after reviewing the situation via video conference, directed officials to stay alert and act swiftly to prevent public inconvenience. He emphasised immediate clearance of uprooted trees, debris, and monitoring of landslide-prone zones and vulnerable buildings like Anganwadis. He also urged the public to avoid swimming in rivers and quarries during the rains. With more rainfall forecast over the next three days, both administrations are on high alert to minimise further damage and ensure public safety. Landslip blocking roads were also reported in Uttara Kannada district. Officials cleared them and ensured smooth movement of vehicles.
