Market Opening Bell: Sensex, Nifty bounce back, defence stock Garden Reach surges 12%
Mumbai: Sensex, Nifty Today: A day after nosediving, Indian benchmark indices Sensex and Nifty bounced back and opened in green on Wednesday, i.e. on May 14, 2025, amid positive global cues. The 30-share BSE Sensex gained 130.27 points to open at 81,278.49, while Nifty was up by 35.45 points, starting the trading session at 24,613.80. In the last trading session, the Sensex closed at 81,148.22 and the Nifty 50 at 24,578.35. In the broader market, the BSE Smallcap and BSE Midcap indices started the session in the green and were up around 400 points.
From the Sensex pack, Tata Steel, Bharti Airtel, Eternal Infosys, and Tech Mahindra were in green in the opening trade, with Tata Steel surging over 4 per cent today as the company has announced that it has earmarked a capital expenditure of Rs 15,000 crore for its operations in India, the UK and the Netherlands in the current financial year. On the other hand, stocks like Tata Motors, Asian Paints, IndusInd Bank, Hindustan Unilever and Nestle India were in the red at the time of writing this news, with Tata Motors falling around 1.38 per cent. Meanwhile, shares of Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers surged over 12 per cent and last seen it was trading at Rs 2,164.95.
In early trade, 1,903 stocks in the Nifty pack were trading in the green, while 466 were trading in the red. 56 stocks remained unchanged.
One of the key reasons behind the bounce back in the Indian stock market is a sharp dip in April Consumer Price Index (CPI), which is the lowest year-on-year inflation since July 2019.
“A strong tailwind for the Indian market is the sharp dip in April CPI inflation to 3.16 per cent. This leaves enough room for the MPC to cut rates thrice more in this cutting cycle. This is positive for the market in general and rate-sensitive in particular,” said Dr. VK Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist, Geojit Investments Limited.
