HYDERABAD: India’s deepening engagement with Argentina took centre stage as Union minister for coal and mines G. Kishan Reddy represented the nation at Argentina’s Independence Day celebrations at Hotel Taj Mansingh in New Delhi on Wednesday.In his keynote address, the minister underlined the strength and vibrancy of India-Argentina ties, calling for further expansion of cooperation across emerging and traditional sectors.Describing Argentina as a trusted partner, Kishan Reddy emphasised that the relationship was rooted in shared interests and a spirit of collaboration. “As the world’s fourth largest economic power, India is committed to moving forward together with Argentina in multiple domains,” he reiterated.The minister referred to recent high-level talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President of Argentina Javier Milei as critical in strengthening the strategic bond between the two countries.Greeting the Argentine government, its citizens and embassy representatives, Kishan Reddy highlighted the cultural affinities binding India and Argentina. He drew special attention to links in tourism, culture, and especially football, noting the immense fan following for legends like Maradona and Messi in India, and recalling nationwide celebrations after Argentina’s FIFA World Cup triumph in 2022.On the economic front, Kishan Reddy pointed to India’s growing demand for critical minerals and expressed confidence in Argentina’s role as a reliable source. He announced that India’s public sector undertaking, Khanij Bidesh India Limited (KABIL), will soon commence operations in five lithium blocks in Argentina’s Catamarca province, marking a significant milestone in resource partnership.The minister also reaffirmed India’s status as a global leader in defence, manufacturing, space technology, pharmaceuticals and medicine, expressing the country’s intent to deepen collaboration in these strategic sectors.Expressing gratitude for Argentina’s unequivocal support during recent terrorist incidents in Pahalgam, the minister underlined the nations’ shared commitment to global security.Earlier in the event, Argentine Ambassador Mariano Agustin Caucino hailed India as a dependable friend, vowing to expand cooperation, especially in the mineral sector and pledging unreserved backing for India’s fight against terrorism. The gathering drew diplomats, business leaders, and officials from both countries, underscoring the broad and growing partnership between India and Argentina.
