Khammam’s Mahila Mart Shows The Way

Nalgonda: Mahila Mart, a unique initiative run by women from Self Help Groups (SHGs) in Khammam city, has proven that women can successfully run and grow a business while competing with corporate companies. Established with an initial investment of Rs 60 lakh, Mahila Mart is located near Ambedkar Bhavan on Wyra Road in Khammam. On average days, it generates daily sales of around Rs 30,000, rising to Rs 40,000– Rs 50,000 on weekends. The uniqueness of Mahila Mart is that it exclusively sells products made and processed by women from SHGs. From quality goods and an inviting ambience to the friendly behaviour of the staff, every element has attracted loyal customers. In Khammam, Mahila Mart serves as a testament to the success of women-led businesses. The idea took shape during the tenure of then district collector Muzammil Khan, who proposed an exclusive outlet for SHG products. The mart, inaugurated on May 28 has since recorded a turnover of Rs 4.5 lakh in just one and a half months. Currently, 68 women from SHGs and MEPMA supply their products to the mart. With many items becoming fast-selling favourites, the District Mahila Samakhya is now considering incorporating SHGs into the supply chain. The product range is diverse—pulses, wood-based handicrafts, jute bags and Kalamkari fabrics. The shelves of Mahila Mart resemble those of a professionally managed corporate retail outlet. To maintain quality and shelf life, a vacuum packaging unit has been installed behind the mart for grocery items.A tea stall run as part of Mahila Mart has also become a hotspot for tea lovers in the city, generating daily sales of Rs 4,500, amounting to Rs 1.35 lakh per month.Khammam District Mahila Samakhya secretary Kotte Vijaya Lakshmi said plans are underway to set up similar marts in Madhira and other towns of the district. This expansion would not only increase the incomes of SHG women by giving them better market access but also empower them towards financial self-sufficiency. She added that the Khammam SHG business model could serve as an inspiration for women across the country. At present, six women are employed at the Mahila Mart in Khammam. “In the end, it is quality that draws customers to any shop. We firmly believe in that,” she said.
