Karnataka’s Second-Largest Planetarium to Rise Near Hampi

Hosapete: In a significant step towards promoting science education and tourism in the Kalyana Karnataka (Hyderabad Karnataka) region, the state government has plans to establish Karnataka’s second-largest planetarium and science centre near the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Hampi.Minister for Science and Technology NS Boseraju, who visited the proposed site at Kamalapura in Vijayanagara district on Monday, said the upcoming facility will be the largest of its kind in Kalyana Karnataka and second only to the Jawaharlal Nehru Planetarium in Bengaluru.“This is part of the government’s broader initiative to set up planetariums and science centres in every district, as envisioned by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah. The aim is to cultivate scientific thinking among youth and create interest in science and technology, especially in historically and culturally significant regions like Hampi,” Boseraju said after inspecting the site.A 10-acre plot along a major road in Kamalapura has been sanctioned for the project. The centre will house a 12-meter nano-seam dome planetarium and will be equipped with state-of-the-art technology and interactive exhibits to attract students and visitors. The land for the project has been provided by the Tourism Department.Boseraju instructed officials to begin preparations for the commencement of construction work at the earliest. The initiative is expected to not only enhance science learning opportunities for students but also boost tourism in the region.Karnataka Science and Technology Promotion Society (KSTePS) Managing Director Sadashiva Prabhu and senior district officials were present during the minister’s visit.
