BENGALURU: A pro-Kannada activist identified as Ravikumar, president of Namma Karunada Yuva Sene, was booked by the Basaveshwara Nagar police in Bengaluru on Friday for allegedly setting fire to posters of Tamil actor Kamal Haasan near Pavithra Paradise Circle. The incident reportedly occurred around 11:45 p.m. on May 28 and was in protest against Kamal Haasan’s recent remark suggesting that Kannada originated from Tamil. Ravikumar has been detained. Police have charged him with causing public disturbance and obstructing vehicular movement. The FIR was filed based on a complaint by a policeman on night patrol, and Ravikumar has been booked under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023. Investigations are ongoing. Meanwhile, BJP leader and Minister of State for Labour and Employment Shobha Karandlaje condemned Kamal Haasan’s remark, stating, “No significance should be attached to his statement.” Speaking at a press conference, she added, “Many try to create rifts between Kannada and Tamil, but we must live amicably. Let it be Kannada, Telugu, Tamil or Malayalam.” She said that experts believe South Indian languages—Kannada, Telugu, Tamil, and Malayalam—emerged together. “There is no question of which language came first,” she said, calling them “like twins.”
