Laxminarayana, assistant executive engineer, irrigation department, who found the encroachment during an inspection in survey numbers 85, 86, 67 and 68. After receiving local complaints, Hyderabad Disaster Response and Asset Protection Agency (HYDRAA) inspected the site on Wednesday. Commissioner A.V. Ranganath found that soil had been filled into the flood canal linking Mullakattva Cheruvu, Kamuni Cheruvu and Maisamma Cheruvu, which runs between Hitech City Railway Station and Kaithalapur. “A large portion of the dumped soil was found inside the Vasavi Construction premises. Concrete pillars were also being raised across the canal despite retaining walls on either side, suggesting possible slab construction over the flow path,” the commissioner said. On his instructions, JCBs and tippers were deployed to clear the blockage. Officials noted that earlier warnings had been issued to the builder to follow canal norms during work in Kaithalapur, where a water body had been named “Vasavi Sarovar”.
