New Delhi: In a decisive move reflecting the escalating tensions between India and Pakistan following the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, the Union government has announced an immediate ban on the import and transit of all goods originating from or passing through Pakistan. The Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) issued a notification on May 2, stating that the prohibition is enacted in the interest of national security and public policy. The DGFT’s notification explicitly states: “Direct or indirect import or transit of all goods originating in or exported from Pakistan, whether or not freely importable or otherwise permitted, shall be prohibited with immediate effect, until further orders.” Any exceptions to this ban will require prior approval from the Government of India. This trade embargo follows the deadly attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, where 26 civilians, including 25 Indian tourists and one local resident, were killed by terrorists.
