Hyderabad:The Cyberabad traffic police advised IT companies to give work from home (WFH) option to their staff on August 14 due to a heavy rain forecast, though Hyderabad saw lighter showers than many morning projections. The IMD kept the city on alert in the evening, but gauges across GHMC recorded mainly light to moderate rain till late night, with the heaviest downpours falling on districts to the south and southeast.Morning maps and advisories had warned of very heavy rain for parts of GHMC. By night, the Met Centre issued an orange alert, warning of “Heavy to Very Heavy Rainfall or Thundershowers at times intense spells, expecting around 7 to 12 cm rainfall in parts of the city/GHMC area.” Later, it forecast “light rain expected for all zones of Hyderabad for the next 3 hours,” which matched most gauge readings. Telangana’s Development Planning Society recorded around 47 mm at Rajendranagar and 45 mm at Bahadurpura, with many GHMC locations between 20 and 40 mm. Higher totals were recorded outside the core city, with stations in Suryapet, Nalgonda, Khammam and nearby belts logging 70 to 110 mm at several points.Weather trackers noted a boundary sitting just south of Hyderabad, with rain bands redeveloping over southern Telangana, leaving the city with breaks and short spells. One independent tracker wrote that north Telangana stayed “unusually silent,” which was why “Hyderabad is not getting proper rains so far,” while radar images through the evening showed stronger echoes east and south of the ORR.Traffic slowed where waterlogging occurred. Cyberabad police reported flooding at the Nanakramguda rotary, near Kondapur Government Hospital at Sriramnagar, the NH-44 service road by Shamshabad and around Satamrai. Drain crews and DRF teams were deployed and diversions marked. Controlled releases followed a field visit to Himayat Sagar, with the service road near Exit 17 and Kalish Khan Dargah closed for safety near the outflow channel. Night reservoir updates showed Osman Sagar steady at about 1,784.8 ft with modest inflows. Himayat Sagar held around 1,761.25 ft, with three gates open at three feet and an outflow of 1,927 cusecs later in the night after higher releases earlier. Officials called the steps precautionary while rain bands stayed active upstream.Commuters and office-goers adjusted plans through the day. “I had no clue there was a high alert today. I saw the clouds had gathered since early morning and rained through the day, bits and pieces, but didn’t notice anything as such. Travelled via metro and returned,” said Ritu Roy, who shuttles between Begumpet and Hitec City. Several tech workers said the work-from-home message came late or read as optional. “The mail dropped after late morning, managers sent texts after 11 and many of them did not come in. The wording wasn’t clear WFH,” said Naveen, an IT professional.Forecasts reiterated heavy to very heavy rain of 70 to 130 mm over 36 hours for Hyderabad. State-wide, the IMD placed 11 districts under red alert at various times, with others under orange. The south and southeast bore the brunt, while the night bulletin kept heavy to extremely heavy rain possible at isolated places on August 14 in Medak, Sangareddy, Vikarabad and parts of the adjoining belt, with thunderstorms and gusty winds possible across several districts.Power utilities shared helpline options in case of outages, with TGSPDCL highlighting 1912 as the quick contact line.
