Hyderabad: All projects in the Krishna river basin in the two Telugu states are likely to have comfortable water levels if the heavy inflows from the upper riparian states seen on Sunday continue for a few days.The Srisailam reservoir, which is receiving inflows of 1.76 lakh cusecs, is expected to reach its full capacity by Monday evening or Tuesday morning. The discharge from the reservoir till last reports came in was 77,740 cusecs.The Tungabhadra dam received unprecedented inflows, as high as 72,490 cusecs on Sunday against a decade-average inflows of 18,485 cusecs in the first week of July. The authorities opened 21 gates and let out 62,444 cusecs in anticipation of increased inflows and sounded a flood alert in the downstream areas, in particular the historical city of Hampi where several structures were inundated.In Godavari basin, however, the inflows were meagre except in the tributary Pranahita which discharged 63,900 cusecs on Sunday. The inflows are expected to touch eight lakh cusecs in a week due to heavy rains. The inflows into Sriramsagar project was just above 6,000 cusecs.“Indications of early filling of Srisailam were witnessed in 2014 when the discharge of water in anticipation of floods was taken up on May 31. But inflows had dropped, leading to a precarious situation,” said a senior irrigation official. “This time, we are expecting study inflows for next few days.”According to officials, discharge was reported from Almatti, Narayanpur and Tungabhadra dams. While Almatti was receiving 1.12 lakh cusecs, it was letting oult one lakh cusecs. Narayanpur received 99,933 cusecs and released the entire volume.
