Harish Gupta Appointed As Andhra Pradesh DGP For Two Years

Vijayawada:The Andhra Pradesh Government has officially appointed senior IPS officer Harish Kumar Gupta as the Director General of Police for the state, granting him a fixed tenure of two years in accordance with the Supreme Court guidelines.Chief Secretary K Vijayanand issued GO-rt-1025 to this effect on Monday.A 1992-batch IPS officer, Gupta is serving as the DGP in full additional charge (FAC) since February 2025. He also holds the post of DG vigilance and enforcement and serves as ex-officio principal secretary to the government in the general administration department.Gupta would attain superannuation in August 2025, but the state government has chosen to extend his service, ensuring continuity in leadership at a critical juncture.The UPSC convened an Empanelment Committee Meeting on April 30, 2025, in New Delhi, following a formal proposal from the State Government. After thorough evaluation, the commission submitted a panel of eligible senior IPS officers. Among the contenders were three other senior officers, but Gupta was selected based on merit, experience and overall suitability for the post.The state cabinet approved the appointment after reviewing service records and recommendations, finalizing Gupta’s appointment for a non-extendable two-year term from the date he formally assumes charge.As per the appointment conditions, Gupta may be relieved before the end of his term only under specific circumstances, such as disciplinary action under AIS rules, conviction in criminal or corruption cases, medical incapacitation, reassignment with consent or other administrative grounds recorded in writing.
