GVMC Issues Show Cause Notices To 27 YSRC Corporators Over Mayoral Vote

Visakhapatnam:District collector M.N. Harindra Prasad, who presided over the meeting that passed the no-confidence motion moved against then Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) mayor Golagani Hari Venkata Kumari, has issued show cause notices to 27 YSRCP corporators, who stand accused of violating the YSRC party whip by voting in favour of the no-confidence motion that led to the removal of the mayor. The collector’s action comes in response to a formal complaint filed by YSRC state general secretary Tynala Vijaya Kumar that the corporators disregarded party directives during the GVMC council meeting on April 19, 2025, to vote against the motion initiated by the NDA alliance, which includes the TD, JS and BJP.Harindra Prasad acted on the complaint invoking Rule 17 of the Municipal Corporation (Motion of No Confidence in Mayor / Deputy Mayor) Rules, as stated in G.O. No. 836 dated December 3, 2008. The corporators, who supported the NDA alliance, now face disciplinary action under the provisions of the Municipal Act.The no-confidence motion was passed with the backing of 74 corporators and ex-officio members, leading to the mayor’s removal. This episode raised concerns about party discipline and unity within the YSRC, amid reports of internal dissent and defections. The 27 YSRC corporators will not have to submit a written explanation within seven days of receiving the notice. If there is no response, the presiding officer is authorised to take action based on the available evidence without informing the corporators.
