Gaurav Gogoi slams CM Himanta Sarma, asks 'why Assam Govt playing politics instead of acting on infiltration?'

Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi has criticized the Assam government for its handling of infiltration issues. Gogoi questioned the state’s border security under the current regime, asking, “If infiltrators are still entering Assam after nearly a decade of the ruling party, who is responsible?” He emphasized that the Congress party’s stance is firm, with no illegal Bangladeshi nationals allowed to stay in Assam.

Gogoi stated that it is the duty of both the Assam government and the central government to prevent illegal migration. However, instead of taking concrete action, the government is engaged in politics. He referred to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s recent remarks in Jharkhand, claiming that Sarma’s politics of polarisation had failed there and would likely have a similar outcome in Assam.

The exchange of words comes after Sarma criticized former Planning Commission member Syeda Hameed for her alleged sympathetic remarks about Bangladeshi immigrants. Sarma accused Hameed of legitimizing illegal infiltrators and claimed that such views align with efforts to destabilize Assam’s identity. He also stated that Bangladeshis are not welcome in Assam and that anyone sympathizing with them should accommodate them in their own backyards.

The escalating political exchange highlights growing tensions over the issue of illegal immigration in Assam, a topic that has long been central to the state’s political landscape.
